Project INFO
The Webber Academy Fieldhouse forms the nucleus of greater Athletic Park. Split into two volumes - a fieldhouse and mixed-use - the facility joins sport, training, and learning into a world-class baseball academy. Leveraging the efficiencies of pre-engineered steel buildings, the facility has a clearspan interior space of 157'-0", allowing for a full MLB-sized infield. The fieldhouse volume features 20,000 sq.ft of training space, including batting cages, weight rooms, and dryland training zones.
The mixed-use volume, separated from the fieldhouse by a concrete firewall, consists of 2 storeys. Classrooms, a full commercial kitchen and concession, coaching rooms, offices, and leasable space for commercial opportunities. On the upper level, multi-purpose rooms flank a dining hall that spills out onto a large patio deck. Above this sits a smaller mezzanine hosting the building's extensive mechanical, electrical, and data services.

SBL was involved from the early stages of the project, collaborating with the rest of the consultants on the structural and civil engineering aspects of the project. Coordination with the general contractor was an important aspect of the project. 3D models of the structural steel, secondary framing, and envelope were provided to assist in coordination, while SBL maintained site presence to ensure all scopes would comply with the structural requirements of the building.
In-house detailing was provided for elements of the envelope, including the panel connections and trim details. Particular attention was needed around the inset openings, the canopies, the upper eaves, and at the second floor patio deck, where unique conditions required custom-built trims to ensure a water-tight envelope.

SBL was contracted to engineer and construct the building package.
Structural Elements
Pre-engineered steel building with 157' clear span in field house. Second and third floor steel mezzanines attached to the building frames.
Building Envelope
Insulated metal panels over cold-form steel girts form the basis of the wall assembly. A combination of Dove Gray and Charcoal was used to create an interesting front facade. A standing-seam metal roof with thermal bridge was installed, achieving R-34.
Building Height
Fieldhouse Area: 25,730 sq.ft Mixed-Use Area: 9,236 sq.ft Building Height: 28'-6" at eave, 50'-6" at the peak.
