With professional-level multi-sport courts and an NHL-sized hockey rink, the facility aspires to become a tournament destination in northern Saskatchewan. And with support facilities, such as childcare, a 500-person event hall, full commercial kitchen, and year-round running track, the Health and Wellness Centre provides ample opportunities for the community.

Project INFO

Originally intended to provide the Thunderchild First Nation with a simple indoor ice rink, it was determined during the design process that the community would benefit from additional services. Working with the Nation to determine what amenities would be of greatest benefit, and ultimately decided upon one large building volume within which various services could be housed.

SBL assisted the Thunderchild Nation to leverage various funding sources, ultimately securing enough for a facility that included all the wish-list items. These include the NHL-sized ice rink, the large multi-sport fieldhouse, a full-service daycare, a 500-person capacity event hall, a full commercial kitchen and concession, a running track above the fieldhouse, multiple event rooms, and administration offices for Band government.

By leveraging the tapered columns of pre-engineered buildings, large open spans could be achieved, allowing for the creation of a dual arena layout. The ice rink and fieldhouse form the main elements of the facility, with a central core running down the center which hosts dressing rooms and second floor bleachers and viewing. On the front end is the grand, circular, double-high atrium with dual curving stairways to the second floor. The event hall and administration offices inhabit the upper level's front end, while the main floor hosts the daycare. A professional wing, consisting of a doctor's office, dental office, physiotherapy, counseling, and a fitness centre with steam room rounds out the services offered in the Wellness Centre, providing year-round services for the community.

SBL was intimately involved in every level of this project. From in-house design and engineering, to marketing material and funding applications, to working as the construction manager. Collaboration with the Thunderchild First Nation over several years was key in informing the design and budget, while our network of architects and engineers brought wisdom and solutions to create an efficient and state-of-the-art facility.
