Centrally located in Calgary, the Bluebird Self-Storage facility brings much needed services to the Mayland Heights community. Featuring over 900 units of various sizes, including large drive-in units around the building's base, the facility brings a large amount of inventory to Calgary's self-storage market. Fully climate-controlled, the Mayland facility provides luxury service, while the Bluebird Nest store and lobby creates a welcoming and high-end experience for clients.

Project INFO

The building mass itself is a simple three-storey cube, measuring 216'-0 x 190'-8". The main floor hosts the Bluebird Nest, offering consumer goods, storage options, and the rental desk. Around the perimeter of the building are large drive-in units. A loading bay, large enough to accommodate several clients with moving trucks, allows for all-season convenience. Storage units throughout the facility range from 5'x5' to 15'x20'. The entire facility is climate controlled and comfortable, allowing the safe storage of items such as electronics or sensitive materials.

The project represents the second phase of the Mayland Place development, and was designed to complement the Mayland Yards CRU project that was completed a year earlier. The central pillar on the Bluebird facility was designed to tie-in with those of Mayland Yards, providing aesthetic continuity and creating a sense of place on the streetscape.

The building structure was set up on a customized grid with column spacing ranging from 20'-0" to 30'-4" to accommodate the interior unit layout. This allowed for greater flexibility in storage units, ensuring interior columns were always hidden within walls rather than removing unit space. The main floor slab was also made thicker to allow for larger trucks and equipment that might be stored or brought into the loading zone.
